Central Sierra/Hwy. 4 Corridor Fishing Report - June 11, 2002

White Pines Lake near Arnold will be planted with Rainbow Trout in the 4 to 10 pound range this coming Saturday night in preparation for the 8th Annual Fathers Day Fishing Derby. The public is welcome and kids 12 or under are free. 13 and up pay a $5.00 entry fee. Anglers can fish against each other in their age groups and form 2-person teams also. Prizes are donated by area businesses. For more information call Ebbetts Pass Sporting Goods at (209) 795-1686. The cooling weather has slowed the snow-melt so the streams are clearing up. Fishing is improving for flycasters now. There are lots of hatches and the water is slowing and warming. Dry flies like Adams, mosquitos, black gnats and ants are all working well in the afternoons. Bait anglers are scoring with worms, crickets and salmon eggs in the streams. Spinners like Panther Martins, Mepps and Rooster Tails are working on planted and wild trout. The high country lakes are also warming near the surface and the bite has really turned on. At Alpine and Spicer, Boaters can troll the top 6 to 8 feet with dodgers and worms or lures. The two campgrounds at the east end of Lake Alpine are scheduled to open this weekend so all campgrounds there will be accessible. Bankies are scoring with power bait and worms fished shallow. Union and Utica are also open for camping but Union has not yet been planted with catchable trout. Most of the snow is gone at Hermit Valley so that area has opened up for camping. There are lots of small wild brookies in the Mokelumne River there. This is a favorite stream for flyfisherman and it's best to use weighted nymphs early in the season. Kinney Reservoir and Mosquito lakes are also clearing out. The road into Highland lakes is still not open due to the amount of snow there. Look for updates on that next week.
